Den Masur, Director of Education

Born February 7, 1949 in Kansas City Missouri, after which my family soon moved to Hawaii when I was just two months old.  After a couple of moves back and forth to Hawaii from the Mainland, I later enjoyed my senior year of high school attending Kubasaki High School in Okinawa, Japan.  Graduating in 1967, I attended San Diego State University majoring in German with a minor in Comparative Literature and Judaic Studies.

In 1971 I married my lovely wife Jane and also received my BA degree the very same week.  Also in 1971, I began my service in the US Army, residing for the most part in Schöningen, Germany, serving as a Russian/German translator in the ASA.  Upon separation from the Army, I taught fifth and sixth grades at Conringschule, Helmstedt, Germany.

Returning to San Diego in late 1975, I entered graduate school at UCSD and immediately became a member of Temple Adat Shalom where I then became active in Jewish education.  In 1977, I was hired as principal of the nascent Mosad Shalom Religious School. In 1979, I also worked as a translator for General Atomic, but because of time conflicts, had to resign my position at Mosad Shalom.  Beginning in 1991, I taught at Poway High School until retiring in 2008.  I received my M.A Ed. in Curriculum Development in 1995.   During my  time with PUSD I had the pleasure of teaching a variety of subjects, e.g. Honors Humanities, World Literature, World History, British Literature, German, and AP Art History among others as well as serving as chair of the ELD Department.   I also had the privilege to serve as Distinguished Teacher in Residence at CSUSM where I taught pre-service teachers in the College of Education.  I served as a DiTR from 2000-2002 and then continued as adjunct faculty at CSUSM until 2005. In 2008, I returned to Mosad Shalom with the newly formed eleventh grade class.

Since teaching at Mosad Shalom, I have had the pleasure of attending a Summer Academy directed by Centropa-Zentrum für jüdische Geschichte des 20. Jahrhunderts in Berlin, Germany (an organization dedicated to the creation of materials for the Holocaust.) In addition, since 2014, I have been attending Ulpan Or, a school for Hebrew Language instruction, both through guided distance learning as well as on site in Tel Aviv, Israel. In 2017, I began my journey as Education Director of Mosad Shalom.  In the summer of 2018, I was given the opportunity to attend a series of seminars at Yad Vashem in Jerusalem focused on creating curriculum that is both appropriate and relevant for today’s students.
