Worlds Above: Searching for Life and Earth-Like Planets

Dr. Bonnie Buratti, Planetary Scientist

The search for life outside our own planet is one of the greatest quests of our time. NASA is going full-bore on this search, looking for evidence of past or present life on Mars, in the deep oceans of the moons of the outer Solar System, and on planets circling other stars.  Today’s talk is an overview of the history of the search, why it is important, and what we have found so far.

Dr. Bonnie J. Buratti is a Principal Research Scientist at NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) who has held leadership roles on many of NASA’s missions and advisory committees. She currently manages the Planetary Sciences Section at JPL. A native of Pennsylvania, she graduated MIT and received her doctorate in Astronomy at Cornell.  She has authored over 200 scientific papers. Dr. Buratti was awarded NASA’s Exceptional Achievement and Exceptional Public Service Medals, and the JPL People Leadership Award. She is a Carl Sagan Medalist, and a Fellow of the American Geophysical Union.

Dr. Buratti  is the author of the popular book World’s Fantastic, Worlds Familiar: a guided tour of the Solar System (Cambridge). Asteroid 90502 Buratti is named after her.

Dr. Buratti has been a member of the Pasadena Jewish Temple and Center for over 30 years and is learning daf yomi (a page of Talmud a Day) for the first time this cycle.
