Join UCSD Professor Emeritus Steven Adler for an entertaining behind-the-curtain exploration of the life and works of Stephen Sondheim, the composer and lyricist whose landmark musicals, West Side Story, Gypsy, Company, A Little Night Music, Sweeney Todd, Sunday in the Park with George, and Into the Woods, indelibly changed the nature of American theatre.

Steven Adler, a native of Brooklyn, New York, is professor emeritus of theatre and provost emeritus of Earl Warren College at UCSD.  He received his BA from the University of Buffalo and his MFA in directing from Penn State. After graduate school, he spent a decade stage managing shows in a wide range of theatre venues, including regional theatres, Off-Broadway, Broadway, national tours, as well as TV shows for HBO, Lifetime, and A&E.  His Broadway credits include the Richard Harris revival of Camelot, the Alan Jay Lerner and Charles Strouse musical Dance a Little Closer, and the Tony Award-winning Big River. During his tenure at UCSD, he stage managed nine productions at La Jolla Playhouse. He is the author of book chapters about producing musicals for anthologies by Oxford University Press and Routledge Press as well as two books: On Broadway: Art and Commerce on the Great White Way and Rough Magic: Making Theatre at the Royal Shakespeare Company. He continues to teach classes at UCSD and is past president of the UCSD Emeriti Association.
