January 2, 2008 - Sid Bernsen
As of January 2, our Sanctuary and Social Hall refurbishment were virtually complete. Most of the remaining finish items should be completed by the end of the first week of 2008, as should final inspections by the City of Poway. The contractor encountered some delays in early December and the unavailability of certain subcontractor's personnel during the December holiday weeks extended the schedule for completing the work. The Ark curtain has been delivered and will be installed soon after the Ark interior painting is completed.

We have reached agreement with the City of Poway on how to assure completion of landscaping and wetlands mitigation effort required by our Permit and expect to receive approval to use the Sanctuary in early January. While cleanup items will continue for several weeks, we hope to begin use of the Sanctuary by January 11.

Please contact Sid Bernsen 619-992-5680 or at the Temple office if you have questions or would like to schedule a tour of the site.

December 1, 2007 - Sid Bernsen
As of mid November, our Sanctuary project was about 90% complete. Although the fires had a slight impact on schedule, we are planning to complete the Sanctuary interior during the first week of December and install the furniture during the following week. Discussions are proceeding with the City of Poway to permit us to use the Sanctuary by the December 21 weekend. Dismantling the Social Hall Bima and wall to the Sanctuary is planned to begin on December 10 and painting and carpeting the Social Hall should be completed within a few weeks.

We are also pleased to announce that TAS was awarded a grant of up to $86,000 from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to upgrade our security systems. The upgrades include improved surveillance, remotely actuated entry door locks and an improved security wall for the school. The award provides 75% of the funds expended for these upgrades, some of our 25% matching funds have been included in the Sanctuary construction budget but additional funding will be necessary to complete the full program.

Please contact Sid Bernsen 619-992-5680 or at the Temple office if you have questions or would like to schedule a tour of the site.

September 1, 2007 - Sid Bernsen
As of early August our Sanctuary project was about 2/3 complete and on schedule for completion of the construction contract in early December. In addition to the Sanctuary we will be improving the lighting, repainting and replacing the carpet in the Social Hall. We expect to have use of the new Sanctuary in late December and plan for a formal dedication in January.

Thanks to some significant new contributions and design savings, we have substantially reduced the initially expected gap between total project costs and received and pledged contributions. By deferring some of the sacred space items, we are hopeful that little, if any, long term financing will be required. Naturally we would like to complete all the planned sacred space items now and limit short-term borrowing until receipt of future pledged funds. However this cannot be done without additional contributions. Now is the time for our congregants to revaluate their ability to help us complete the entire program on a debt-free basis.

Please contact Sid Bernsen 619-992-5680 or at the Temple office if you have questions or would like to schedule a tour of the site.

Structural supports and trusses for the roof were installed in June and the roof plywood sheathing has now been completed. Interior framing is also mostly complete and work has begun on installation of mechanical, electrical and other equipment in the Sanctuary. We do not anticipate opening the Social Hall to the Sanctuary or any other significant work in the Social Hall until the second week of October (after Sukkot and Simchat Torah). The project remains on schedule for completion in December.

Please contact Sid Bernsen 619-992-5680 or at the Temple office if you have questions or would like to schedule a tour of the site.

Block work for the exterior of the structure was completed by the end of April. In May, the concrete floors will be placed and structural steel and roof beams installation will begin. The stairs to the Social Hall Stage and new screen wall were completed by the end of April and the new Social Hall exit and existing store room are scheduled to be completed in May. We expect to open up the wall between the Social Hall and Sanctuary soon after Yom Kippur. As a result of minor delays, the project schedule now anticipates completion the first week of December.

Please contact Sid Bernsen 619-992-5680 or at the Temple office if you have questions or would like to schedule a tour of the site.

April 4, 2007 - Sid Bernsen
By the beginning of April block work for the exterior of the structure was about 90% complete and should be finished by the end of April. Work on the interior of the Sanctuary, new Social Hall exit and store rooms should be completed by the end of April or early May. A protective wall has been erected at the front of the existing Bima to allow construction of the west side of the new Sanctuary but it will permit full use of the Bima for the next few months. A new screen wall in front of the kitchen entrance and stairway to the Social Hall stage also will be completed in April. The project continues to be on schedule for completion in November. Please contact Sid Bernsen 619-992-5680 ot the Temple office if you have questions or would like to schedule a tour of the site.

February 2, 2007 - Sid Bernsen
Soil compaction for the Sanctuary building pad was completed in January. On Friday, January 26 we received the building permit just in time for our January 28th gala groundbreaking celebration. Construction work began on Monday, January 29. With excavation for the foundations and preparations for remodeling the existing storage areas to provide a new Social Hall exit. As of February 2 the underground plumbing and foundation excavation has been completed. Weather permitting, we plan to complete the foundations and begin constructing the exterior masonry walls in early February.

April 10, 2006 - Remarks by Rabbi Malino at Sanctuary 2000 Information Meeting
I am so excited to say this to you: We are almost there! This campaign to build our sanctuary has been a lot like climbing a mountain together. We began with a lot of enthusiasm, and the first part of the trail was relatively easy. Our muscles were fresh, and we enjoyed the exhilaration of being on a new path, the early morning sunlight overhead. We were adding a wonderful accomplishment to the success we have had in growing our congregation. But then when the trail got a little more steep, and we were fighting our way over rough ground, we had to slow down to catch our breath. We wondered why we had even thought we could make it up such a huge mountain. Our frustration overcame our confidence. The trail seemed to be filled with switchbacks, taking us back and forth across the mountain, but not leading us any higher up.

But now, thanks to the tremendous efforts of our sanctuary building committee, we have pushed our tired muscles through a few more miles, and we have made the final turn. We are out of the forest, above the tree-line, and the sun shines once more above our heads. Every direction we look, we have fabulous views. We can see how far we have come, and how little we have yet to go. The way to the top of the mountain isn’t easy: the path is still steep, but I know that if we pull together, and encourage each other to make those final steps, we can reach the summit.

As we move from the celebration of our freedom from Egypt on Passover to the spiritual high of standing to receive the Torah at Mount Sinai on Shavuot, let us celebrate the freedom from the frustration and disappointment of being almost there, and make our way to the top of Mount Sinai, close to God, and surrounded by our community. As we read in Gates of Prayer, “We do not ask for a life of ease, for happiness without alloy, we ask only to be uncomplaining and unafraid.....Make us understand that life calls us not merely to enjoy the richness of the earth, but to exult in heights gained after the toil of climbing.” Together we will reach the summit and build our sanctuary, knowing that we are creating a beautiful sacred space for our congregation, and bestowing a great gift on many generations to come.
