News from the Abayudaya Jewish Community of Uganda

A leader from a small Jewish community in Uganda came to speak to our 5-7th graders on Sunday, November 12, 2007.

Mr. Aaron Kintu Moses is the headmaster of the Abayudaya Primary School, Director of Education and acting spiritual leader of the Abayudaya Jewish Community of Mbale, Uganda. He shared the inspiring story of this courageous 700 member Jewish community (established in 1919) and their struggle to maintain their Jewish identity in largely Christian and Moslem Uganda.

Mr. Kintu Moses also presented an upbeat, multi-media program celebrating Jewish diversity, sharing the latest news about the two Kulanu supported schools in Uganda, primary and S. K. High School, serving rural Jewish, Muslim and Christian children studying together in peace. He spoke about new sustainable development efforts in child hunger, health education, adult literacy, tourism; fair trade organic coffee, clean drinking water, electricity, a Hebrew loan society and more.

The program focused on education and the daily life of the African Jewish child, was age appropriate for all levels, and featured a slideshow, African Jewish music and hand-crafted African yarmulka (kippot) display.
