Temple Adat Shalom's Action for Social Justice (ASJ), formally known as the Social Action Committee, is dedicated to healing the world (Tikkun O'lam) by giving members of the congregation the opportunity to commit "acts of love and kindness."

Throughout the year, ASJ organizes and participates in various projects, such as a High Holy Day Food Drive, annual Crop Walks, periodic Blood Drives, an annual Mitzvah Day; and the Social Action Shabbat.

ASJ meets once a month to discuss prior and upcoming projects. The meetings generally last a couple of hours. If you want to help make a difference, please join us.

    Adult Education
Adult Education, Torah Lishmah - Study for its Own Sake, seeks to provide life-long learning that stimulates the mind and the heart.

Moses Maimonides stated "just as it is a mitzvah to educate a child, so too, is the parent commanded to be educated." In response to this command, you will find that the program offers an opportunity to learn according to your interests and your present level of knowledge.

This year's program, offers Beginning Hebrew for individuals with no previous study of Hebrew, as well as Torah Cantillation for those who already read Torah and wish to chant Torah for Shabbat and Holiday Services.

Classes are offered for young families such as Jewish Home Gardens that gives young families the opportunity to learn about Jewish holidays and joyfully integrate them into home life. Saturday Night at the Movies, films of Jewish content, is offered with some suitable for family viewing.

Offerings also include Jewish composers, worship music and Israeli dancing, as well as several lectures by individuals recognized for their expertise and scholarship. Lecture topics include, among others, A Portable God: The Origins of Judaism & Christianity; Missionary Impossible: a Jewish Response to Missionaries; and How a Jew Becomes Black in a Jewish Land.

The Adult Education program is supported by donations and by the hard work of committee members who invite you to:
  • READ about the full program on line or request a brochure.
  • PARTICIPATE by attending a lecture or enrolling in a course.
  • SUGGEST a topic of interest for next year's program.

  • Temple Adat Shalom takes pride in the high quality and diversity of the adult education offerings for congregants and the community.

Please call Temple Adat Shalom at 858-451-1200 or email for further information.

    Archives Committee
Mission Statement: To systematically select, catalogue and preserve Temple Adat Shalom records, photographs, audio and video cassettes, CDS, publications, monthly Shofars and other information determined to have permanent and continuing value to the congregation. In short, it is the keeper of the Temple's history.

Meetings: At the present time and for many years the committee consists only of two Temple Archivists.

How Does the Work Get Done: During the year the Archivists collect items for a file that is organized by year. Shofars are stored in the Temple Administrator's file. There is separate case for CDs. We also have many photos that need to be organized by someone who is a long time member and familiar with people and events.

Each year the Archivist writes the significant history of the year past which is then given to the webmaster for inclusion on Temple's web page. The history beginning in 1974 is also available in hard copy in the Administrator's office and on a CD placed in the CD case holding other CDs in the storage cabinet.

Please contact Helene Idells or Ellen Weinstein if you'd like to join this committee:

    Chavurah Committee
The Chavurah committee serves as a facilitor to introduce, start, and support ongoing chavurot in our Temple. We also plan and host events on behalf of the chavurot in our Temple.

What we do in meetings: Most of our efforts are matching applications up with prospective chavurot or helping to start new chavurot. We also plan events related to the chavurot, outreach to get more members to consider joining a chavurah.

We meet about once every other month and the meetings are usually 2 hours.

We also host a chavurah coordinator (one representative per chavurah) meeting 2 - 3 times per year.

We have had two main activities and will be expanding to three for the upcoming year.

    • Havdalah in the Park- open to all Temple
    • Fall Chavurah mixer. We usually do this during Sukkot and it's an outreach event for people wanting to join a chavurah or learn about joining a chavurah. Existing chavurot that are interested in taking in new members also participate.
    • Chavurah Shabbat - We will invite the chavurot to come and have dinner together after an early service.

    Electronics and Communications Committee (ECC)
The ECC is a Temple special purpose committee. This committee gets involved in anything involving the temple computers, internal networking, digital communication, or other areas where the technical expertise required to make a decision is beyond the knowledge of the Temple office staff and/or most congregants. Our committee does not have regular meetings and reviews problems or opportunities as they come up. Most of the issues are resolved by email within the committee rather than an actual meeting. In the past we prepared and recommended to the temple board the Temple email policy, Temple website policy, directly involved in the selection of the Temple's computers, networking, and selection of our networking consultant.

We are looking for members that can share their ideas and technical expertise to discuss problems and solutions inorder to meet current and projected electronic and communication needs for our congregation. Contact Lou Harris at for additional information.

    ·    ·    ·    ·    ·

    Membership Committee
The Membership Committee is composed of friendly people who want to share the joy and community of Temple Adat Shalom with unaffiliated members of the Jewish community and also make sure that our current members continue to want to be part of our religious family. Toward that end we, together with the Outreach Committee, advertise in San Diego media and run various activities to introduce TAS to potential members. We also sponsor activities to welcome new members, honor long time members and reach out at community events such as Rancho Bernardo Live and the San Diego Yom Ha'atzmaut festivals.

We are always seeking committee members who are outgoing and really like being members of Adat Shalom to share their enthusiasm.

We meet most months on the secong Thursday evening of the month for about one and one-half hours to plan the details for activities in the works. We also are trying to find some new and innovative activities and reach out to all sectors of the community so that all feel welcome.

    Oneg Committee
I am a committee chairperson, but have no real meetings. the purpose of the oneg committee is to shop and prepare desserts for the Friday nite Service and the Saturday morning Kiddush. It is always done with a lot of thought towards making our congregants, who love a treat after service, happy. It also is called the great ice breaker. It gives new members and old members a chance to mix and mingle and get to know each other. It is definitely a place for pleasant talk, and happy thoughts. The new member surely benefits from this close association with our members who can tell them all about the volunteer spots that are interesting and interacting.

I get most of the volunteers from the congregation and a lot of my worker-bees, as I love to call them, are repeat performances. There are many times I can use more people, and calling and interacting with the congregation women usually works. No meetings are necessary. It is on the job training. It is a set up situation that volunteers enjoy helping with.

Lots of good conversation goes on those mornings that they work. Ask me any questions. Love you, Freda: .

    Outreach Committee
Reform Jewish Outreach began as a positive response to interfaith marriages and the increasing number of people choosing Judaism. At Temple Adat Shalom, our Outreach programs are geared toward Jews by Choice, those considering conversion, unaffiliated Jews, and interfaith families. We encourage participation in services, life cycle events, and Temple functions. Our programs are open to everyone - members and non-members, Jews and non-Jews.

    Outreach Goals:
    • Sensitize the congregation to the needs of interfaith couples, Jews by Choice, and their families.
    • Encourage people to take an active role in Temple life and continue to make Jewish choices for their families.
    • Provide a support system for anyone seeking to make Jewish choices for themselves and/or their families.

Committee Meetings: The committee meets the second Thursday of each month together with the Membership Committee to plan our events. We also have a meeting in the Spring to plan the events for the upcoming year. We meet once at the end of summer to prepare for the year. Our meetings are held at the Temple at 7:00pm and usually last about an hour.

If you would like to join our committee, or even just help at one or two events, please contact Sharon Stanford, Committee Chair at or phone 760-741-7783. I'll be glad to answer any questions you may have!

    Religious Practices Committee
Why we exist: Together with our Rabbi and Cantor we work to further the religious affairs and spiritual enrichment of the Congregation and apply the principles of Reform Judaism to the work we undertake.

To this end we engage in the following tasks and activities:
    • Provide and evaluate worship opportunities for a diverse congregation: There are Family Services, Tot Shabbatot, Services with music as a major component, Healing Services, and other special services throughout the year. EG: After a period of study that lasted almost three years we created a Contemporary Rosh Hashanah Service.
    • Together with our clergy, and where needed, the approval of the Board of Trustees, we: Establish and review policies for B'nai Mitzvah and Confirmation, Local minhag: kippot, tallitot, how much Hebrew in the service, Adoption of new Prayer books, Times of Services
    • Other tasks are: To oversee ushering, Schedule services in the Rabbi's and Cantor's absence, Distribute honors for Shabbat and the High Holy Days, To provide leaders for a Shiva Minyan, Encouraging congregants to present a dÕvar Torah
    • Looking to the Future: some ideas: Teen services, Encouraging home observances, Involving more congregants in Services

To accomplish this we ask our committee members to engage in study, and to attend a sufficient number of services that will let us understand the minhag at Adat Shalom. We meet about six times a year- with meetings that last about two to two and one-half hours.

While our committee is at its maximum size at the moment there are many ways you can help us. We look to you to join in as many of the following activities as possible:
    • USHERING: This is a wonderful and warm way to welcome members at a Shabbat service. This is also the first contact visitors have with the congregation and helping them "settle in" is an important and task. If you are interested please contact Mary Klein at ushercorps@adatshalom.com.
    • PRESENTING A DVAR TORAH: Natalie Diamond, info@adatshalom.com would be pleased schedule a date for you and help you in any way.
    • LEADING A SERVICE: Call the Rabbi and add your name to the list
    • CONDUCTING A SHIVA MINYAN: This is a wonderful mitzvah! Check with Jane Friedman at the TAS office: 858-451-1200 , jsfriedman@adatshalom.com

ANY QUESTIONS? Contact our chairperson, Gerry Voit: , 858-451-3998.

    Strategic Planning Committee
The Strategic Planning Committee is responsible for developing and revising a five-year strategic plan for TAS, on an annual basis. The five-year plan is comprehensive in its coverage of all aspects of TAS (including religious, educational, administrative, membership, physical plant, and financial issues, among others).

At meetings, we discuss how the committee can facilitate the process of refining the TempleÕs long term goals, and we work on developing the current version of the TAS five-year plan. This involves consulting with other TAS committees, with the Board of Trustees, and with the congregation. We seek out available resources from the URJ, other congregations, and other organizations to help us in our work.

We meet once a month at the synagogue, for two hours, on the second Tuesday of each month. We welcome participation from members with interest and/or expertise in long-range planning for TAS. Contact Miriam Schustack: for additional information.
